Hidden depths

In 2020 Laura won the Rebecca Vassie Memorial Award to support her photography project, Hidden Depths.  This project has involved taking portraits and collecting the stories of older people in the UK, illustrating the rich and interesting lives they lead. She aims to challenge some of the ageist stereotypes which we often see around us which she believe reflect systemic and casual issues of prejudice against older people and a general age-segregation which is problematic in much of the country. The images and stories were exhibited at Yorkshire Art Space’s Persistence Works in March 2022.

The project developed further into some work with Sheffield Hallam University’s Lab4Living where Laura made some films with the photographic subjects and ran photography workshops with different community groups exploring the theme of Reimagining Ageing. These culminated in a parallel exhibition at The White Building.

To mark the end of the exhibitions there was an event where some of the photographic subjects came and played music and gave talks and people came together to debate, eat and celebrate older life and all it can be.

We’d love to here your comments on the project or your thoughts around positive ageing.
